Oranges

Ok this may seem like a silly question but I have always wondered why if I live in Florida all the oranges are from California.  Wouldn't it make more sense to keep the locally grown products on the shelf?  Maybe oranges wouldn't be so expensive here if we didn't get them from California.

Ha yeah that makes no sense. You always hear about "Florida oranges". Do some research and get back to us.

California and Arizona are the other two states where oranges are extensively cultivated. Their oranges, however, have thicker skins than Florida fruits, a characteristic that helps to protect them against the drier climates of the West. They are also more prized as eating oranges.

Hmmm, well I just ate a California orange and it wasn't as good as the ones I usually pick out of the yard.  Maybe just a bad orange.

Going strictly by this comment alone, my guess is that you can't easily find Florida oranges in Florida supermarkets because no one would buy them.

I mean, what Floridian would actually go out and buy an orange for $0.70/ea. when he/she could just go outside and pick one off a tree? Oranges would have to be cheaper than dirt to seem like a bargain to a Floridian.

Why sell them down there when they could just ship 'em all up north where we'd pay upwards of about $1.00 a pop for those sweet, succulent, aromatic little f**kers. We drink soda that tastes like oranges, we clean our floors with shit that smells like oranges, we burn candles that smell like oranges, we chew gum and eat Tic Tacs that taste like oranges... we're orange junkies. I bet if we mummified the dead up here, we'd be sent off to the afterlife with a big bag of oranges.

Oh, and they probably sell California oranges in Florida because certain people (i.e. native Californians) actually prefer western produce.
